Guyana and the Dominican Republic are working together to promote tourism, aiming to create a high-end travel destination.

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali confirmed this partnership after meeting with Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader. He highlighted that private sector investments and strategic collaborations will help Guyana’s tourism industry grow.

“I was very pleased with our discussion. The president of the Dominican Republic is ready to market Guyana and the DR as a joint destination, just two and a half hours apart,” President Ali said.

These efforts will strengthen Guyana’s position in the market, giving it a competitive edge.

Last year, Sky High Aviation Services Dominicana launched direct flights between the two nations, opening up new opportunities for business and tourism.

President Ali made these remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Pegasus-branded hotel at the Pegasus Hotel and Corporate Centre in Kingston. This facility will be one of several new hotels offering high-quality services.

The government is focusing on easy-to-develop tourism opportunities, such as promoting Guyana’s rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes to attract international visitors.

“We need to engage the diaspora, encouraging them to invest and visit Guyana. To do this, we must work with top global brands. We are also focusing on eco and nature-based tourism, attracting the best investors to the country,” President Ali explained.

Regional tourism brands are being included in this plan to expand eco-tourism options. The goal is to bring 3 million visitors to Guyana by 2030.

“To achieve this, we must create a calendar of exciting events that appeal to a variety of tourists. We are in talks with leading figures in sports and entertainment to shape this plan,” President Ali added.

A new independent hotel will be added to Guyana’s hospitality sector. It will be built by removing part of the Pegasus Poolside and Grand Savannah Suite, bridging the old with the new.

The hotel will have 170 executive rooms, a large third-floor gym, a 13th-floor executive lounge, and a penthouse with a city skyline view.

President Ali praised Pegasus Hotels CEO Robert Badal and his family for their investment, emphasizing that long-term success in tourism requires collaboration and persistence.

CEO Robert Badal noted that Guyana’s rapid growth, especially in the oil and gas industry, has made it a key investment location. He acknowledged challenges such as labor shortages and financing difficulties but stressed that the private sector remains committed to major projects that boost the economy.
