The High Commission of India, Colombo, successfully organized an event titled “India Sri Lanka Tourism Connect: From the Ganges to the Kelani, A Voyage of Friendship & Discovery” on November 19, 2025, with a focus on developing stronger tourism linkages between India and Sri Lanka. The event brought together key stakeholders from both countries, deliberating on how analytics, branding, and technology could facilitate value addition toward enhancing the tourism experience and boosting bilateral travel. The initiative underlines the growing commitment of both countries toward having in place a robust ecosystem in tourism that will create value for travelers, businesses, and the broader regional economy.

Strengthening India-Sri Lanka Tourism Relations

The event was attended by Vijitha Herath, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism for Sri Lanka, and Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, reflecting the importance both governments place on tourism as a key component of their bilateral relationship. In his address, Santosh Jha emphasized that tourism offers a unique platform for cultural exchange, economic development, and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Minister Herath reiterated the importance of tourism cooperation, noting that Sri Lanka and India share rich cultural heritage, and expanding tourism cooperation between the two countries will significantly contribute to job creation, local economies, and community development.

A Focus on Technology and Digital Solutions for Tourism

Harikishore S., Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, delivered a keynote address that highlighted India’s evolving tourism branding strategy and its focus on adopting technology to enhance the tourism experience. One of the key areas discussed was how digital tourism solutions and data analytics can create better, more efficient tourism services, particularly for travelers seeking personalized experiences in India and Sri Lanka.

As tourism technology continues to play a transformative role in the global industry, India and Sri Lanka are looking to harness the power of digital platforms, including online booking systems, mobile apps, and virtual tours, to make travel easier, more engaging, and sustainable. IIT Madras also presented its cutting-edge Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications for tourism, offering travelers immersive digital journeys through iconic Indian landmarks like the Taj Mahal and Jaipur’s Amber Fort.

By integrating technology into tourism development, both nations aim to position themselves as digital-first destinations that cater to the evolving preferences of millennial and Gen Z travelers who prioritize convenience, interactivity, and personalization in their travel experiences.

Showcasing Madhya Pradesh as a Key Destination for Sri Lankan Travelers

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of Madhya Pradesh as a key tourism destination for Sri Lankan travelers. A high-level delegation from Madhya Pradesh led by Dr. Ilayaraja T., Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation, participated in the event. The state was showcased for its rich cultural heritage, historical sites, and the world-famous Khajuraho Temples—a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Madhya Pradesh is positioning itself as a must-visit destination for Sri Lankan tourists, especially those interested in cultural tourism and spiritual travel. The state’s scenic landscapes, historical monuments, and spiritual significance make it an attractive alternative for Sri Lankan travelers looking to explore more of India beyond the usual destinations.

Cultural Exchange and Collaboration Through Tourism

The India-Sri Lanka Tourism Connect event also placed a strong emphasis on the cultural ties between the two nations.
